i actually like the approach but i would watch how u word it. rather than say " where do u live" ask " where are u from" -

where do u live sounds a little to stalker-ish

but if u still get a strange reaction when u ask "where are u from" u can simply say - well im not trying to visit u....

I think approaching someone with:
Where are you from
will result in a really really really akward situation.
