In malls etc, you can try something like "Hey, I'm writing a book and I'm trying to find out who is hurt more by break up, girls or guys?". They will answer girls for sure, but than you can say "I think guy, because..." etc etc. Just one example.

Just tell them you saw them walking by, you think they're really cute, and you want to say hi.

Just a few weeks ago, my first girl of the day was this smoking blonde I saw across the street. I ran over and did my approach, here's what happened:

Now, since I was being direct and honest, I had nothing to fear when she "called me out" on what I was doing (the indirect guy's worst nightmare).

If you go indirect and she calls you out, what can you say? You can DENY you're trying to pick her up, which is more lying and will get you nowhere, or you just say "yeah, you know what, that shit I said at the beginning was just a way to start a conversation with you." How fucking WEAK does that shit sound?

Girls are attracted to confidence over almost anything else. Stopping them on the street to tell them you find them attractive and want to get to know them is about the most confident thing you can do.

You don't have to respond to her call-out at all. You can just keep right on going, controlling the frame. If she really presses, you could make a diminished response like "Humor me." That's not weakness, that's a command.

Nothing wrong with being direct, but you're making it sound like there's some fatal flaw in being indirect. I'm not seeing it. What's the big deal on some girl "calling you" on something?
