Hi guys,

So classes just started at my university and I've had one class with this girl. I know she's majoring in fashion design because the professor made each person say their major in class. I also know two other girls in fashion design who I'm decent friends with. I'm almost sure that the girl in my class knows both my friends somewhat (I don't think they're close friends) and I'm pretty sure she's single.

Openers are probably my biggest weakness, but here's what I came up with:

(As class ends and she walks past me)
Me: Hey, I'm not sure, but didn't you say you were a fashion design major last time in class?
HB: Yeah
Me: Oh cool. Do you know (mention my two other friends)?
HB: Yes, I do
Me: Oh. I always like meeting friends of theirs. Everyone they've introduced me to is so cool.

or

HB: No, I don't
Me: Oh. That's too bad they have really cool friends.

I don't know where I would take the conversation from here. Any suggestions to make this a better open? Or should I scrap it and go with something different?

Classes are somewhat easy to start because you have a lot of common things to talk about...some examples are if she likes the professor,,if she doesnt you can kind of make fun of him in a joking way.. Or another one is the layout of the room and and how its totally diferent from the other ones( if it is), why you guys both chose the same class, blah blah blah

If she's from your class here are some openers that work well , at least to start an conversation.

You:Do you know anything about "SubjectX"?


or

You:Hey, I saw that you are very active at the class,it means you know everything about "SubjectX"

or

You:Hey,how are you ?
Her:Fine you?
You:Fine , meeting my new classmates and they seem very cool

(Laughs)

They way I see it, this opener conveys a bit of neediness. You're basing this conversation off of the fact that you heard her say (however many days ago) that she mentioned she was a fashion design major to the whole class. If she does not know you yet, it might seem strange to her that you remember that. Just a thought for ya.

And in the scenario you mentioned: when she says no....you're kinda left hanging.

Here's something that might help you out though:

Maybe throw in a little tease about her major that she stated in class?
"omg weren't you the one who said she was studying meteorology? You don't look like a weather girl haha"
Just a thought but you wanna stand out from the other dudes in class who are thinking of anything just to start a conversation huh?

From there she will most likely tell you her real major then you can ask about your friends or whatever. If you're into cold reads when she tells you about her major just say "oh yeah that totally fits you. You must be one of those detail oriented people, etc"

@Interlude: I realize that the opener I made does come off as semi-needy considering I remember her major out of everyone else in the class. I was trying to tone it back by saying I couldn't remember if it was her or not. Don't know if that really helps.

I think I'd be fine to hold a conversation with her especially with the suggestions above. My biggest problem is the first line to get her drawn into the conversation because I don't have a reason to be talking to her. I'm probably over-thinking it. She's not really talkative, but she is a HB for sure.

I don't know if it makes a big difference, but I was peacocking during our first class. Wearing clothes on top of the current trends, spoke a lot, tried to look as confident as possible. I'm pretty sure 95% of the class had their eyes focused on me. In fact one girl stared at me while I was talking and was still staring after I finished. It seemed pretty obvious she wanted my attention so I looked over at her and we locked eyes for a clear second before she looked away. I'm not interested in her, but I thought it was cool.



EDIT: Okay so I spoke with her today. Without going through all the details, here's what happened. After class was over I approached her and asked if she had the book for the class. The teacher had assigned homework from the book and I don't have it. She ordered the book through the mail and she would get it between tomorrow and Friday. She agreed to let me photocopy it if it comes in before the assignment is due and gave me her email.

The assignment is due to 2 days, so I'm going to email her tomorrow and hopefully she has the book. Though I was getting kind of bad vibes from her though like that she didn't want to give me her email (or number). If she doesn't have the book, I'm going to try being friendly towards her during class and build off of that.
