I don't if this works

Basically i ask them if they want to hear about my thanksgiving

then i tell them about my thanksgiving

is this a good routine?

not really, because you are ASKING for their approval, thus lowering your value. If you want to use your thanksgiving as an opener (providing it was really good and it will be a good DHV story), try something more like "hey I bet for a drink your thanksgiving wasn't as wild as mine, so...blabla"
