I'm not sure I get the joke...

First things first, you shouldn't open with that sort of AFC line. That's like openning with, "Sooo, having a good night?" You never want to start a conversation with a stranger on such an boring topic. And ALL yes/no answer questions are unoriginal, unprovoking, and unintelligent.
I mean maybe if you came up to her and said "Hey do you come here often?" She says "No," You say: "So that makes sense why you're sitting in my booth." If she says "Yes," you say: "Do you know all the people in here? I'm looking for someone interesting to help me with a debate I'm having with a friend?" Then she'll bait you with questions and wanting to know more.

That is genious.. props to Jonas.. that has to be one of the best things i've ever read on this forum. pretending to actually want the seat from her (in a joking/teasing manner) will definately get her atention.. thats definately a great opener..

I've actually used this a few times before and it worked pretty well. You just exaggerate it and really take it over the top, trying to be super smooth, and then laugh and play it off with something like "I just heard a guy use it on a group of girls and I couldn't resist"

Also, for added fun, I use this on waitresses and bar ladies. Combined with a little grin and maybe a with a wink. But the problem with using it on hired guns is that they either don't get the joke (of course the go their often, they work there) or they're too busy and you need something stronger to hook them.

Dude I think I get what your saying, I'll often say it as a joke like rediculously sleazy if we're standing at the bar or something and not talking just to break the ice because your both laughing at cliche situation. I think its good, totally difuses them, unless they take you seriously in which case you tell them it was a joke and make them feel stupid for believing you.

However I would never use this line seriously they would probably laugh in your face.

I think you really should avoid any kind of subtlety or irony in an opener. The obvious danger is that she doesn't understand you are being clever and you have just delivered the worst possible opener in existence. Or maybe she does and she thinks this guy trying to be clever is a superior jerk, who thinks she is a dumb klutz. If there is anything ambiguous about your opener she will probably not give you the benefit of the doubt.

Even if she "gets" it, you are still telegraphing sexual interest.

I always tried this sort of line in my AFC days and it always sucked. Keep it simple.
