The opener doesn't have to be smooth. People put way too much emphasis on that when in fact it's everything after the opener that counts, the way you escalate, how you transition and lead the conversation the way you want it to go. Hell, even that doesn't have to be smooth... I'm walking proof.

my openers are mostly direct.
i just walk up with confidence radiating through the entire room and say
something like "what's up, i thought you were cute and i wanted to say hi"

but i do agree with solomon, mid-game is much more important

I always love to play some type of game for my opener so i have to go with the the four secret question game or the cube however with that being said soloman is right that its the stuff after the opener thats really matters

it's really all about your frame. Best thing, and a crucial part of my game, is to go out with the buddies. Good buddies, the kind who understand social dynamics. Let the smoking and joking run wild, have a lot of fun with your friends, and it will be very easy to open almost anyone. You will be radiating good vibes. It is crucial to have this attitude before you go opening. As they say, you cannot build a temple on shifting sands.
I can't remember most of my openers, they're never canned but situational.
