What would you say?

I prefer to say "Yes, but before many people become friends, they are also not familiar with each other. I want to ask you one question-do you have a very few friends? I think you should open up yourself because you seems very defensive... I liked you before, so I had very few friends. But now I have totally changed. Would you like to make friends with me now?"

Does it work?

Depends on the situation. Was it, "We're not familiar with each other" as a response to an attempted escalation? If not, just a simple "Maybe not, but I'd like to change all that. :) " would do the trick.
