Maybe I need help talking to dudes, because they make me nervous. Do you think these ideas could help women too? :?

Haha, definitely!

Start off with something like, I like your jacket, or did you watch the football game, or whatever. Then introduce yourself, the guy will do likewise. From there all you have to do is try to connect.
Connecting should be the same. Ask questions like do you like to travel, and where they would like to go the most. What are some of their most fun adventures etc.. Tell stories about yourself, good happy stories, and you should be well on your way.
