It might sound obvious but I find the easiest women to strike up conversation with are those in the middle of some kind of activity. You can therefore just ask a simple question about what they're up to and avoid any contrived lines about their appearance etc. I generally find most women are happy to strike up conversation as they enjoy having show genuine interest in their hobby etc and probably think by talking about something they're doing you're not coming on to them. One example was when I saw a cute MILF taking some cuttings from plants in a park. Just asking her what she was up to sparked a long conversation which finished with her suggesting I take the afternoon off work.

Number as was genuinely on way to work and, sadly not being my own boss, the option of taking an afternoon off at the drop of a hat is not an option.

It's true what you say tho. It's better to talk to them about stuff they are interested in rather than their looks or random pick up lines.
