WRONG! It depends on how it's said, how's it delivered and the kind of person you are. I've never used a clever opener in my life and 99% of girls will talk to me when I say hi or whatever. Think Don Draper or James Bond. Always complimentary of women but still masculine and anything but AFC. If a girls dad called her beautiful all the time, then she'll have that association and it will work for you. There are no hard and fast rules about what will work and what won't. If you've got the right look, body language and tone, the actual words in an opener mean Jack Shit.
