Ok, so I tend to have 0 trouble with going up to random girls and starting short conversations. My trouble comes when I try and first text them. So take for example about 30 minutes ago I was at my universities gym, the girls volleyball tryouts just finished. I see this really cute girl, like hb8, so I obviously go up to her and start talking to her, they were just on the way to the next room to continue the tryout so I keep it short just using my line when I'm at the gym,
me "Hey, I know you're in a rush but I saw you over there, thought you were really cute, and I had to talk to you. My names goovreau"
her "ahah hi my names hb8, and yeah I'm in a little bit of a rush I'm on the way to my tryout"
me "Ok well I guess I have bad timing but I'll keep it fast, could I have your number so I could talk to you later?"
her" yeah sure!"
I then hand her my phone and she puts in her number and I wish her luck , and the end.

What's a good opener in a situation like this where I've had all of a 30 second conversation with her?

Text game - i would go with some pretty forward -

'Hey hb8, its goov from the gym was jst chilling watching some tv my legs are agony after that workout... how was tryouts? think you done well?'

Something along those lines or -

'hey hb8, its goov from the gym i dnt normally do that kind of thing approach a girl like that but i had to take the chance, how did try outs go ?'

one of those would be ok always revert it back to her try outs, where you met because it was a short experience etc

A witty, funny comment would be OK too...

"Hi! I'm the guy who randomly came up to you today and asked for your number!"

I would text something to get her to smile... Hey HB8 I saw you talking to that cute guy in between tryouts, can you introduce me to him?

Yea, this is basically a classic text game scenario. I'm no expert there, so just follow standard operating procedure I guess, lolz.

I'm freestyling here, but the volleyball thing could be your "in". Most times you don't really know what the girl is really into, but clearly this girl probably likes sports, particularly the one she is playing. I'd strike up conversation about it and ask if she won, ask her how her team is doing, how long she's played, etc. Maybe DHV yourself and tell her that you use to play with friends on the weekend or something. She'll be more inclined to open up and invest some time into you and talk to you about the things she likes doing. It's perhaps a slightly better strategy then just hitting her with a bunch of random comments, questions, and jokes that you could use on any random girl.
