Alright, so a couple months ago this girl from a neighboring high school added me on facebook, she is really attractive and I only have one friend in common with her (I know the mutual friend very well). My friend and the girl that I want to meet went to the same school a year ago but im not sure how well they know each other because they were in different grades. But anyways... this is obvious but I was wondering what would be a good opener on facebook chat. Im gonna ask my friend if she knows her first to get the low down on this girl . Do you guys have any suggestions on what I should say to open up the conversation on facebook?

Why don't you just say'"Hello. I am welcoming you to my friend's list. How are you?'', she was the one who initiated first contact by adding you, just a normal message will do the trick, if she's interested.

You can always continue the conversation from there.

Ask her about the relationship with your mutual friend...

You: Didn't you go to _____ high school?
Her: Yes
You: I had a friend named ____ who went there, do
you know her?

If she says no then you could say that you thought she
might since you have 1 mutual friend. Then you could
ask how/why she added you.
