This needs a wing or an already open set. I usually do it with a wing.

Move into proximity of target set and casually talk to your wing AFC style. Then say (So they can hear you) "Oh I have to show you something really cool!" At this point I do a magic trick to my wing. One which requires him to try it first. If I'm sat so it's easily visible it will draw at least someone in the target sets attention. Then I demonstrate the trick, do a double take on the set and say "You want a go don't you?"

On friday we took a cheap little 3" RC car out and drove it around the table in a quiet bar. "You want a go don't you" worked on pretty much every set that walked by. We had people setting up racetracks, beer mat jumps and all sorts of stuff. The best part was, on a mixed set (2 guys, 3 girls) we gave the guys the remote, they were totally distracted by the car and me and my wing could just talk to the girls.

The beauty of this opener is that they open you first by paying attention. And I'm useless (ok getting better but i'm still an AFC) at seeing approach invitations so this gives me a very easy opener which allows me to practice my routines more because I open more sets.
