It'd be easier telling you what to fix if you showed us your profile, your pictures, and an example of messages you send.

As for messages, remember that you can't disqualify yourself, since you are on a dating site for a reason, and so is she - Just act comfortable doing all this and get to the point of what you want. Tell them why their profile intrigued you (Common interests, etc - don't mention looks, except maybe smiles and "you seem like fun" and such) then say that you are interested in getting to know her.
Don't look for IOI-s right away - all she knows about you is your profile and your message. If your message was funny (it's good to communicate a fun vibe) and/or contained smilies, and you get smilies back, you can take that as an IOI, and maybe if she points out what she likes in your profile, but don't expect more and take those for what they are worth.
Also, don't seem like you want to send messages for too long - get to the point of meeting in 2-3 messages.

Another tip I didn't see in the links he provided is to omit specific information intentionally. Saying "you have a great job that you love" demonstrates value, but saying what you do specifically isn't necessary. If you leave out that information, she has to ask you if she wants to know. It gives her something to ask you, and when she does you know that she's at least a little bit interested.

A few other examples I use in my profile are saying I have a unique name (she: what is your unique name?), and saying that I cook killer pancakes (she: what else do you know how to cook?). I even go as far as to say that I am not defined by my interests, and don't really list any at all. I say that people only really have to have a few things in common and the rest is all chemistry. I say that I'd be happy to talk about such things after she knows the real me. This usually prompts nice open-ended questions like "what do you like to do for fun?" I don't know if the last part is right or wrong, but it's what I'm doing it currently and it seems reasonably effective. I get at least average response rate, and a higher than average number of questions about myself.

Responding to your message is usually an IOI, unless you negged her or offended her and she responds angrily. Even then, anger can be an IOI. She cared enough about what you thought to get angry about it. You might be able to work with that. Actually reading your profile is an IOI. Asking you a question about yourself is an IOI.

IOIs are a little weaker in the internet dating world because there's a lot of uncertainty in everything you do. Truly, the real game can't start until you meet. Being able to quickly lock down a meeting is the best IOI you can expect from internet dating. After that, you'd basically starting all over again, which is why you don't want to waste a lot of time getting to that point.
