If you have a strong profile it works really well.
They know you are being playful because you obviously would not send the message once you have realised 'they are not the person you thought'.
The best thing about it is that it stops you doing the wrong things such as ass kissing. It also demonstrates you are playful and draws their attention to you where they see how awesome you are because of you're profile and then you can carry on from there.
