few facts: I have a few friends in common with her but we've never met or heard about each other

Well you can clearly see it wasn't a very fun convo.
Biggest mistake was what killed it. You complimented her looks, just like every other AFC on facebook probably does. You generally don't want to compliment physical features on girls unless you are rewarding them for complying with something. You're best off complimenting non physical features like, being fun, musical tastes, humor, clothing style, etc.

Next time you IM her try using some stuff from text game. You can find a great thread in the 'mid-game' section with tons of fun lines to use in text/IM game.

Also try to avoid bringing up the ppl you know in common. It's a boring topic, you should be fun enough to talk to even if you guys had no friends in common.
