Yeah that's what I'm saying...there's not a quick fix from just using a dslr. Like the 2 pics of the guy with the dog, the dslr picture uses a lens more suited to portraits, it's edited, better posed and framed better. Someone with just a dslr and no knowledge would take the same picture as the smartphone one; it would just be sharper. And then again only sharper if the camera guy knows how to use the lens or has a tripod. I've given friends my camera to take photos of me and they don't come out well due to blur, poor composition and bad focus. So I'm agreeing with what you're saying; use a dslr...ONLY if you put some time in to figure out how to use it correctly and edit it correctly. If you're just gonna snap a picture, a smartphone will give a better picture because they are more geared to portraits.
I think neo87 makes a good contribution for those looking for a quick fix. Some of the smartphones on the market are really quite nice, actually. If you have the money, invest in a few shots. If not, I think a good phone shot should work, too.
A good photo doesn't just mean it's super sharp. True, most smartphones made during the past few years typically have great cameras. But I think guys believe DSLRs are this magic pill to great photos. A DSLR is GREAT, but it has many limitations. When you see a great pic with a dslr it's seldom done JUST with a good camera. Like dragula's first dslr pic, you're kidding yourself if you think that's just a dslr. You're missing the $300 external flash the photographer used, the off camera assistants to hold shade over the guy to manage the shadows, the $500 portrait lens. Go on youtube and look for a beginner's photo shoot and see how many things come into play. Good photos can help your online results immensely, but for most people a weekend with a base dslr is not enough. Even if you get a lens clip for your smartphone, put some thought into how you smile, the angles and how you pose. A picture of yourself isnt a good picture because the camera has X megapixels. Its a good picture when you take the time and put consideration into getting a good picture.
Free way to have a DSLR for a couple weeks...go to BB and sign up for the cred card. Get a DSLR on the cred card. You have 2 weeks to return. No fees no interest once you return it. See how a dslr works. Thats how I got my first dslr and found out it was not what I thought.
