The key to success on sites like Okcupid are pictures, if you are a good looking guy you can get away with one good picture. It doesn't matter what you write on your profile summary, I used a fictional book summary as my self summary.

If you are having trouble getting response with your profile, its your pictures. Do your homework look at model pictures online, look at your fashion and style. If you are not a celebrity or model hot don't take selfies. For the best photo quality it's best to use DSLR that way you get those amazing depth of field shots, where you're in focus and the background is blurred. You could always post on craigslist to try find a photographer or student to take some pics for you. If you insist on using your iphone or android take your pics outside preferably when you can get the best natural light. Get a friend or stranger to take the pic for you or set your phone up on a tripod.

Agreed. Pictures are worth a thousand words but which words? Make sure they say what you want them to say. Pictures like what you are describing are great. Pictures of you out doing the things that interest you are important also to establish congruence with what you say in your profile. Example: You say you rock climb. Show me a picture of you doing it too!
