Try finding a more interesting question to ask. For example "Had you have your fruit today?"... Nothing that is to serious.
When I'm doing online sarging then I'm already prepared with the frist three or so messages, because this is what it's takes when your only sending short messages to one other.

It is also most effective to use their name if possible.

In my area (population about 700,000), a new profile of an average looking 25yo girl on PoF will receive one new message every 45 minutes for about two weeks. That's about 450 in that time span, though the number of messages drops quickly after that. Sending out a message such as "How was your weekend" will simply get lost in the dozens of other messages that say the same thing. Unless your profile pic is super good, like a male model or something, you need to have something better than that.

"Have you had your fruit today" is light years beyond what other guys are asking. You can come up with something simple and copy/paste it. There is little effort in online game. But even with a mind-blowingly great opener, the response rate still isn't all that great compared to asking someone on the street.
