Me: well good now that i got your attention i have a situation i would like your opinion on. One of my girl firends is throwing a xmas party and has invited me to go so i feel like i need to buy her a gift. What do you think would be a good gift for a 18 year old girl....

You still have lots of work ahead of you...getting a number, then f-closing in person.

My personal opinion is that the standard rooting stuff doesn't apply online...I never say "Now that I have your attention" because then it seems like I needed their attention, or wanted their attention specifically. I also don't say "I need an opinion on something", though I do say it in different words ("I'm trying to decide what to get my 18 yo friend", or "What should I get my 18yo friend")

I also like to keep control of the conversation "Where did you find me then" gets a "Hah! If you don't know, then, well, you don't deserve to know :P", or a "Maybe I'll tell you if you're nice enough" (or it just gets ignored, depends on if I think she'll take it as creepy or not)

"So you do like this girl as more than just a friend" would have gotten a "Are you coming on to me?" type response (not that one specifically, but something to that effect). Or a false disqualifier.

The reason I do things this way is so that they are responding to me. They're qualifying themselves to me, they're the ones who are submissive. I'm also not telegraphing interest...trying overly hard to say "She's just a friend" says that you're available and interested.
