Quality photos(as long you're well groomed, don't look like you forum icon picture, and are displaying representation character[no selfies]), a quality written profile, and a catchy opener should fare you pretty well.

Sure the better looking guys will get more responses, but 2 out of 400 is completely ridiculous. I can get more than that with a blank profile and no pictures on okcupid with the right opener. It seems to me that you're looking for reasons you're not having much success instead of putting the focus on how you can improve your results.
