Hi guys, hoping someone can give me advice on what I should do to game this girl.

There's a really attractive ex-schoolmate I've noticed since I was in college. It's been 2 years since graduation. She knows who I am, and I know who she is as we've seen each other around school. Once she happened to take my order while she was working at this fast food place and she acknowledged with a smile and 'hi' and I did the same. Other than that, I've never talked to her before.

Just this week, I followed her Instagram and thought she became even better looking than before. Apparently, she just broke up with her boyfriend on 20th May 2013.

I figured that it's very unlikely that we'll bump into each other outside, and so the only way I'm gonna be able to start talking to her is through Facebook message. How should I open the conversation (hopefully minimal awkwardness) and do I go indirect or direct? It'd be appreciated if someone could teach me how to progress it to asking her out as well.

This is quite a long shot. If i thought i had a chance with every girl who ever said hi to me, I wouldn't be able to sleep, hell, I wouldn't be able to even zip up my pants, or wear any! Why don't you just friend her on facebook as a start. If you are already facebook friends, when was your last communication with her? If it was during college, like 2 years ago? Jeez, good luck. I'd open with something like "Hey, funny thing, ran into a random kid/girl from college and he/she mentioned your name, how are you?"

I'm not hitting on her because she said hi, but because I'm finding her really attractive.

I was considering that since I haven't really had a real proper conversation with her before, it would be weird to kick things off as "just trying to catch up like an old friend". So maybe I should subtly indicate my interest pretty early after the opener by not beating around the bush or having too much fluff. Perhaps I should initiate flirting early and go a bit direct to let her know that I'm hitting on her basically.

I know of this guy who does c&f and tries to attract girls during texting/fb message by getting her to qualify herself as "fun enough/adventurous enough" for him and basically he just plays the "I'm interested in you, but would you like to prove that you're worthy?" (not exact words) card. It works brilliantly for him and girls respond to that. He isn't particularly good looking but his inner game and frame is strong like that, so maybe I could use that method during the fb convo?

That approach is garbage. You have never really talked to her in years? Like I said. good luck. But I would go with my suggestion. "Funny thing, someone mentioned you the other day from school, how are you?" You pretty much have no shot trying to randomly execute PUA moves on a girl who probably barely remembers who you are. Don't overgame it. I think my opener has the best chance of success initiating a conversation here, though still yours odds are kind of slim.
