No offense man, but that's weak.

1) If she calls you out on something like that, tell her not to flatter herself.
2) DO NOT apologize for anything. Especially something that trivial.

It's alright though. You're new. There's no such thing as a failed approach. This is all experience. Learn from it, adjust, and you'll be fine.

If it were me, I wouldn't have said sorry at all, wouldn't have made smilies, and I would have just been like straight up "Yeah I was staring. What." I feel like when people get apologetic or deny something like that, they then start to look like a creep. Luckily for you, this girl seems like she's halfway between and you can definitely get somewhere with this.

In the end, don't start being too sweet. Say something nice like you did, and then back off. I'd stop chatting with her for a little bit.

Unless you massively fuck up and hurt her deep down, I really wouldn't (apologize). I know it sounds extreme, but it's effective in my experience.

Dude you can't back down from anything she says. You don;t have to apologise for your personality.

If she calls you a creep just say "So admiring you makes me a creep well you must be butt ugly personality wise" then just walk away and she will probably apologise to you.
