most ppl are too smart for statements that start out trying to diffuse your real intentions.... like you cant say "im not trying to make you mad but...."
or "im not trying to make you tell you what to do but...."
it just comes across as I AM trying to make you mad or I AM trying to tell you what to do....
so when you say im NOT trying to pick you up what youre really coming across as saying is I AM trying to pick you up.

That was kinda what was goin for, a mixed sorta reaction, seemed stale, w/ out some sort of SOI.

What can I say I found the conservation funny. I doubt you could have done anything differently really. You certainly got the girl thinking "who is this guy" and more than likely you are standing out in her mind due to your conservation with her. You may or may not have her interest in you. But I am sure she will look forward to chatting with you and building that interest/attraction will most probably come easier to do with that conversation. The only thing I would have change was this line:

You conveyed your interest waaaay too early, and discredited what you said by saying 'it's only an opener'.
