Not approaching groups of women (I am perhaps unusual in that being easy for me), just general interaction with a group of people I'm out with instead of sitting in the background.

It seems like the alpha's (whether male or female) usually occupy the group's attention with their often loud and continual banter. If you're not like that yourself, it's hard to compete with them, let alone take control of the conversation. I have the same problem. I just don't have the energy level required to overpower alpha personalities.
