I think the only way to really get over it is practice, the rest is common sense, you can tell the difference between a good and bad speaker.
I think one thing that helped me was following the "3 second rule" (in a sense) and just not thinking to much before you start to talk. As soon as you start thinking about what you're doing you second guess exactly what you're used to in a normal conversation (where you don't normally worry about it). Once this happens you're doing something you're not used to and the situation cascades. Your voice becomes timid, your body language awkward, etc.
Although I should let you know I didn't find my public speaking skills to transfer over to talking with women that well. It just got to the point where I was comfortable in front of a crowd, but a single girl was still a different situation. I really do think the only way to get better, either with public speaking or with women, is just plain practice.
