I was revising for my Biology finals reading The Selfish Gene when I came across a guy called Robert Trivers. He's an evolutionary biologist and a pretty fascinating person. Anywho I read that he's studied extensively into a psychological principal called Self-Deception. It's fairly self explanatory from its name.

It's about the fact we're never completely in touch with reality. Our own opinions, desires and beliefs take us further and further away from reality.

(Personally, I feel this may have severe implications for people with a strong inner game.)

Look at this and next time you ask a question think about it. One of the best things about asking questions and talking to others is you see things through another perspective. This is even better on the Internet where it's anonymous and the people you're talking to are most likely not to be jaded and be neutral without anything to gain other than the satisfaction from giving others quality, helpful and useful advice.

Think about how much you are deceiving yourself, based on the outcome you desire.

Hope this helps. Mods if you want to move this feel free. I felt this was the best section.

What you describe has been taught in Buddhism for a really long time -- they say enlightenment is seeing reality as it really is.
Yeah, I acknowledge that this isn't by any means a new concept. It's a new description for something that has been talked about for centuries and has been part of our wiring and engraved in our psyche for millions more.

@Melodical - Very interesting. TYVM for the link. That was a bit of enlightenment for me.

The reality you experience is separated from "real" reality by a system of filters and processing mechanism so complex that it beggars description.

Working with incomplete data-- data filled with blindspots and sparsely populated with actual fact-- these processing mechanisms construct an imperfect model of reality. Over time, as more data is accumulated, the model begins more and more to reflect the real world (though can never do so completely).

The difference between the internal model, and actual reality, is what we call cognitive dissonance. It can be painful when you realize that large parts of the internal model don't match up with new, incoming data.

I think this touches deeply on how seduction works, and how relationships work-- especially relationships where information is less complete than it might be, such as LDR.
