What are some good investments to get into? What investments do YOU have? What would your dream investment be? I'm young and I really would like to build my assets ASAP. Currently I have five stocks (long-term) and 401K and I really want to build my investment portfolio up. What are your suggestions?

My dream investment would be owning (not be a president) an NFL team. Those guys make BANK and they do ABSOLUTELY nothing!

I personally like index funds. I have 3 in my 401k and 2 in my taxable investment account. One is the total stock market index from Vanguard (VTSMX) and the other is the total bond market index from Vanguard (VBMFX). My 401k has basically the same thing that Fidelity offers for index funds. The expense ratios are real low and that's where most people lose money. Having all your money tied up in to one or two stocks is risky because if they go bankrupt you are going to lose all your money. The index funds are so diverse that if one company fails you hardly notice it. The returns might not be as great but at least it's a pretty steady climb up. A good book to read is

The Little Book of Common Sense Investing: The Only Way to Guarantee Your Fair Share of Stock Market Returns by John Bogle.

It's the best book I ever read and I wish I had read it first when I started investing.

Ahh, thanks for the reply. I have something similar to the index funds, I believe. I'm in the military and they offer me this TSP (Thrift Savings Plan). I'm currently investing in that, along with four stocks that I bought myself, one government bond, and one mutual bond. I'm looking for some "risky" investments right now; maybe buying a house and renting it out? Do you have any risky investments?

Yeah buying a house in a nice neighborhood or in a popular vacation spot would be a good investment if you can afford to sit on it for up to 5 years. There's plenty of houses being sold by banks real cheap. I had some Chinese stocks that I bough right before the stock markets peaked in 2007. I rode them down and then back up last year. When China's market was up almost 100% last year I decided it was time to get out and stick with index funds. If you are looking for stocks, buying stocks in China or India would be a good choice for high risk. Maybe even buying Tata motors stock would be good. They should be entering America's auto market inT the next couple of years offering small and cheap cars. Good luck on whatever you choose.

Five years huh? Lol thats a long way to go. At any rate, thanks for the info. I'll definitely look up some foreign stocks.
