The forums are a big place....I was wondering if anyone out here has created a successful invention?

How did you start? I have the idea, but I don't have the materials nor tools to create it; where should I start?

Are those patent companies actually scams, like I have heard?

you cant patent an idea (everybody thinks though that you can patent an idea, but you cant), you can only patent the exact way you build it. like what materials and how to assemble etc...
but i guess you should build a prototype first before you can describe how to build it.

if you dont have the materials/tools, then buy them! or hire an expert to do it... if its too expensive for you then get an investor! get the patent later, first make it work!

I had an idea the other day but god knows how it would be made.
Ready?

A self packing grocery/shopping bag. Why? I work on a till in a clothes/homeware store and there is nothing I hate more than packing someones bag with them standing there tapping their watch (no joke, they do this) I just feel like saying "pack your own f***ing bag then".
Sorry I get a little annoyed about this sometimes lol.

Yes they are allllll scams! I do inventing (amatuer still  ) but you gotta make a prototype. I have a couple that I am working on, and its really a step by step process.

I recommend building one yourself and saving up money to get a legit one made down the road. It will cost you around 1,000 dollars or so to get one printed, or made other wise. (this shit is pretty cool; model making)

http://www.zcorp.com/documents/259_650Video.wvx

Then, when you got a legit working product, you gotta sell it. Make a list of companies in which your product would fit, ie tongue condom= durex (props to whose idea was that in another thread, gold, haha)

Once you gotta a list of the companies, you need to find THE MAN within the company. This is the guy who handles new products or is in charge of development; every company has one. You need to get him on THE PHONE!

First you sell him on a 15 minute meeting. This is where you present your product idea through a presentation. Harvey Reese has a good book on the process of getting your idea out there. PM me if you have any more questions. This is a process I am in the middle of discovering myself, but have been working at it for a couple years now, Good Luck

one question though....as much as I want to present this idea to people to see what they think, I of course want to keep it to myself to safeguard it.

How do I find out if it is even going to take off or be a good invention before making that investment?

Well first of all, you must do research on your idea. There are plenty of patent search websites out there. This is what I use which is more than proper. http://www.freepatentsonline.com/

If its not patented, smile! You probably have zero competition. Don't be too worried about people stealing your idea tho. It takes sooooo much work to actually get your idea out there, most people quit and give up after a few hours of work. Plus, no one really knows where to start anyways.

Really man, it comes down to how much you believe in your product. Mountains are moved by the motivated. If you cant get behind your idea, who else will? Shitty shitty products are made everyday because people MAKE THEM HAPPEN. And of course, great products fall through because of the opposite.

Heres an encouraging stat I remind myself of; In the US, there are 10,000 lawyers for every one inventor. Also, the market is ALWAYS looking for new ideas. That is the one thing that will never change. Inventors are a rare rare breed! Welcome to the club.
