In Moscow and St. Pete you need to learn Russian. If you don't you will be in a world of hurt. Estonia is a good place if your Russian/Estonian isn't very good.

I've lived in Moscow and St Petersburg for a total of about 3 years. Great cities! Certainly knowing Russian helps, but its not essential. Being a foreigner (as in any country) is a big help. I now speak Russian conversationally, but I didn't initially and I picked up without any trouble.

I would recommend visiting dive bars and rock venues rather than showy night clubs. The girls in these places have a bit more of a western attitude and a better sense of humour (in my experience). You won't find as many 9s and 10s at these places, but there are definitely plenty of HBs that you won't mind have breakfast with the next morning.

If you want any advice on particular places, let me know.

Don't listen to anyone who says Russia is dodgy or dangerous. Its no worse than any other big city. You obviously need to be careful, as you do in any country where you don't speak the language, but if you're not a dick, you'll be fine.

Also, I'll be in Moscow from 29 December - 7 January and then in St Petersburg from 7-10 January.
