My theory is that because it is sometimes hard to tell if the person facing you is a man or woman it was very important for our ancestors to differentiate potential mates from "not potential mates".

I have wondered over a similar thing. Why many girls are attracted to tall men (if they are proportional) isn't too hard to figure out - size matters. The bigger the guy, the better chance to defeat a lion (for instance). A girl feels safe in the arms of a big guy.

Are men attracted to shorter women? I think in general we like long legs. Certainly when I was first starting out with pick up, the most intimidating girls for me to go and talk to were the ones who were 5'10 or 5'11. I would say 2 or 3 inches shorter than me, yes (I'm 6'2) but anything much shorter than about 5'8 and I generally won't find the girl all that attractive.
