I've been thinking about the meaning of being an "Alpha". Take this all with a grain of salt if you dont like it as it's still thoughts I'm formulating...

On the one hand (is a thumb and fore fingers) the term "Alpha" and "beta", imo, carries with it a context of "might makes right"; the bigger man gets what he wants and whosever expense. Which is true but has some problems attached to it:

The problem is that it can really breed the same old as*ho*e mentality that many of us were put under the thumb of/bullied under during our school years (think of how jocks typically act). Who's to say that by following the same context that we don't become the same and treat others in the same shi**y way we were treated?

Point: Alpha can have a very solely self-focused mentality attached to it.

On the other hand, if you look at things as "Leaders" and "Followers" rather than solely "Alphas" and "betas", the context magically changes. The frame changes slightly.

Now you're not just an Alpha trying to get what he wants but a Leader guiding a woman to what will maker her succeed (which is effectively what you want as well). Not only is that less douchey but feeds more into a womans desire for comfort and safety. This lends more to our supposed motto of "leaving a woman better off than when you found her". That's what a leader does, helps the followers to acheive their goals.

I've also noticed that a Leader mentality can have more positive effects with dudes and other AMOG's than a two dimensional A/B. If you're solely an Alpha than you have to butt heads (like rams) to see who has the biggest game. If you're a Leader, than youre goal is more group focused and how the group can succeed (with you as Leader of course ). If dudes try to challenge you in a traditional Alpha manner, they're now doing it at the expense of the harmony of the group. Followers don't like this. (think of how birds act when one bird in the flock starts to get riled up - they all get agitated).

This also gives you the opportunity to promote other AMOG's to positions of "authority" within the group - making them "Generals" of sort... the key thing being, YOUR Generals that YOU promoted. -- If it's better for the group that you let someone else lead than (as the Alpha Leader) you can then choose to give up power temporarily. The message being that the power is YOURS to give up and take back again depending on what's best for the group. That shows a security in your position and seems to me to be real Alphaness.

I almost totally agree with you, I think...

If I have understood you correctly, when you say "alpha" you mean the physically strongest butthead in the group? That's what it means among animals at least, since that is the individual who will get the role of the leader. And the leader is the one who gets the girls.

Among humans I don't think the same primitive rules apply, because we are more intelligent creatures with a language. In a group, men will more or less consciously compete about the "alpha position", and this competition is verbal at first. It is about leading the group by getting others' attention, and as long as people "give up" and let the most stubborn attention whore win, there will be no conflict. People tend to give up, because it is nice to have a leader since being a leader means a lot of work and responsibilities. It is easy and comfortable.

If a single leader cannot be selected, if there are two or more "alpha male candidates" who refuse to give up, you may have a conflict that will be resolved through a fight. Or someone will run away angry and refuse to join the group. Alternatively they just make themselves look ridiculous in which case they will all loose, and someone else will take the role of the leader.

My point with this is to show you that the alpha male is a role you get by winning a competition, a competition between attention whores so to speak, and being the winner is IMO exactly what it means to be a "natural leader". So if you ask me, I would say that a natural leader is an alpha male.

Remember though, you will be judged by the rest of the group all the time, and the group may elect a different leader if you are not good enough.

I dont know about the butthead part, but Alpha Im think wolf. Watch animal planet and see how the Silverback gorillas get pussy. And the social hierarchy of monkeys. Its quite interesting actually. But for humans maybe an alpha male meant different things at different points in history. We don;t run arund with swords fighting each other like the good old days, now its about brains, money, and power. It is a competition thing and as humans we want that person who is confident, protective, secure, has vision, can take us places and control things. The sexiest thing in a man for a women to see is Control. It could be many different forms. Physical control, financial control, mental control...Bullshit artist only trick people but thats what they are trying to flex to women.

Two alphas compete (within the context of a group) and the one with the more developed leader side of their alphaness wins while the dude who's sole game is chest-thumping loses. At the same time I concede that people do still respond to direct authority. Maybe it's a matter of the venue in which the game is taking place... hmm...

Sweden is a fairly progressive society correct? What is the game like there?

BootyB: I think you made a good point about the evolution of human society. We are evolving and our understanding/way of thinking is as well. I would postulate that solely being Alpha (alpha w/out benevolent leadership) these days, if not done very well, is often construed as solely being a caveman: as you both put it, more closer to our base animal nature.

Any rate, Im from the west-coast and so things are a bit different than the rest of the world. What is NY like? I've heard that it can be a highly competitive envieronment (is that true?).
