What do you do when people in the set start talking with each other about something they have in common- work, for instance, leaving you standing there like a jackass because you have nothing to add?

Are you already in the set when they do this? If so, you've lost their interest. Either eject or catch their interest again. Mystery has a good way of doing that. He literally stops them and says something like "hey, the party is here, with me. That's right." Then he goes on as they turn back to him.
