so HB9 I see on a regular basis occasionally brings up her bf, but always in a negative context. usually i say as little as possible, ie. "wow thats lame" and change the subject
is there a motive here, or am I reading too far into this? if not, is there a better way to handle it?

How many IOIs is she giving? If she isn't sexually interested in you she's simply using you to vent. Welcome to the LJBF zone.
On the other hand, if she's giving IOIs and is sexually interested in you she might be dropping hints that she wants to dump her boyfriend for you and wants you to take responsibility for the breakup. Good job!
