Don't think of it like changing yourself, or being fake. Think of it like learning to play an instrument. You can't pick up a guitar and just play it by being yourself, you have to learn how. Sure at first when you play an instrument you play songs written by composers other than yourself. However eventually you can write your own music.
I think of learning the game like that.

Take a famous CEO. How many seminaries of public speaking, team management, leading skills etc.. did he do? He developed himself to become a better person, and at a specific point, you start to integrate that person.
