So i started this thread because i heard my most favorite guru of all times(no offense everyone) RSD Julien say he was not in the cool camp in high school, actually his old photos show him as regular, maybe even somewhat nerdy young lad. Now for me Julien is the very epitome of coolnes, but why is he cool and what is cool actually? Is it jock=cool as teen movies tend to suggest? Well not rely, we had a few jocks around here who had trouble with women. Then is it rich=cool, no, i would not say so, just look at this recent case of Elliot Rodger, the kid had everything, car, clothes, money, and still nothing. Being famous maybe? http://img4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb2009 ... 5/Alan.jpg this guy is also famous but is he cool? Not rely. So what is cool actually, i read this http://philosophynow.org/issues/80/What ... To_Be_Cool article and i think it has a point to some degree, what do you think cool is?

I think coolness is something in the viewer's eye, because I don't think Julien is that cool. I think he is weird. If I'm going to guess why you think he is cool, I would guess it's all those (standard) things that attracts girls too - his confidence, tonality, body language etc. He is an alpha male, which makes him a natural leader, which in turn is what beta males (no offense) look up to with fascination.

Nice article!
Quote:
The aesthetics of cool developed mainly as a behavioral attitude practiced by black men in the United States at the time of slavery. Slavery made necessary the cultivation of special defense mechanisms which employed emotional detachment and irony. A cool attitude helped slaves and former slaves to cope with exploitation or simply made it possible to walk the streets at night. During slavery, and long afterwards, overt aggression by blacks was punishable by death. Provocation had to remain relatively inoffensive, and any level of serious intent had to be disguised or suppressed. So cool represents a paradoxical fusion of submission and subversion. It’s a classic case of resistance to authority through creativity and innovation.
That whole article is basically giving you your answer, and is quite fascinating. Basically, developing your own values and boundaries and beliefs is cool. Shitting on other people's is not cool. Playing games is cool. Needing to win or sitting on the sidelines is not cool. Having friends, socializing, and getting along with people is cool. Worrying whether or not they think you're cool is not cool.
Quote:
Epictetus the Stoic posited a strict difference between those things that depend on us and those things that do not depend on us, and advocated developing an attitude of regarding the things we can’t influence as unimportant. What depends upon us are our impulses, passions, attitudes, opinions, desires, beliefs and judgments. These things we must improve. Everything that cannot be controlled by us – death, the actions of others, or the past, for examples – should leave us indifferent. Through this insight that all the things upon which we have no influence are best neglected, a ‘cool’ attitude is nurtured.
Believe in yourself. Make space for others.
