So, one of my ex-girlfriends from way back who had severe depression and would think there were real-life aliens in the closet and possibly that I was one too... and who's mental state was repaired while taking depression medications her doctor prescribed.. she was faking it right? And when she wanted to kill herself to escape from those horrible thoughts (b4 medication) .. that was misdiagnosed and fake too... right?? The Bad Guy, I think you need to have a serious talk with yourself and also educate yourself on this topic. It is not one to be taken lightly. Please educate yourself before you continue to make yourself look/sound like an ignoramus.
Dude, we aren't talking about that. (And what were you doing with a chick that messed up?)

“It is hard to believe this many children have the specific brain-related problem called ADHD,” said LeFever, assistant professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at the Center for Pediatric Research. “That is a very high rate of ADHD, by anyones estimate,” said psychologist Nadine M. Lambert of the University of California at Berkeley. Researchers also found that ADHD medication was used by three times as many boys as girls and twice as many whites as blacks. The study also showed that the use of the medication increased as children aged. By the fifth grade, 19 percent to 20 percent of white boys had received ADHD drugs.

Google exploded when I searched this, here's a quick excerpt from the Associated Press recently reported on ABC News comes a story about the over diagnosis and over drug SPAM of children for Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder, (ADHD).

Well its funny i just read an article

http://www.webmd.com/add-adhd/news/2007 ... -diagnosed

"An estimated 2.4 million children between the ages of 8 and 15 in the U.S. have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but fewer than half of them have been diagnosed or are receiving appropriate SPAM, researchers report.

The findings are based on the first national ADHD prevalence study to use the most widely accepted diagnostic tool to identify the disorder.

Previous estimates from the American Academy of Pediatrics suggest that ADHD afflicts as few as 4% and as many as 12% of school-aged children in the U.S. The new assessment places the figure at 8.7%."

Not only is 8.7% less then half the 20% you mentioned...but the figure is much closer to my other post placeing the percentage at 3-7%.

Im not gonna get into a cock fight about it with you. Simply put there are people out there with valid disorders, diagnosed by credible doctors. Im certainly one of them, and im of the hopes that the original poster is as well.

I certainly advocate getting second, or third opinions...to retake tests or try different types of tests. Im definatly not saying medication is the only means for SPAM. Thats like saying working out is the only way to stay healthy, when you must eat properly and sleep well too. However, its no different then saying that people with high blood pressure should find ways to deal with it without using meds...or that people with diabetis shouldnt take insulin.

Its part of a valid SPAM. IMO the "overdiagnosis" issue is a rumor, similar in a way to people beleiving they shouldnt take anitboitics for ailements because it makes the illness build resistance. The issue isnt over prescribtion its dumb ass people not finishing thier prescribed amount, and then the illness builds a resistance.

Your entitled to your opinion, but maybe instead of being overly assertive about your belief you should simply recommned he get a second opinion because you beleive its over diagnosed.

We've kinda gotten a bit off topic here, so I'm gonna say one last thing. No one can really say for sure whether people are being over, under, or properly diagnosed with all sorts of conditions . I once had a doctor tell me I would have to be circumcised due to a condition I'd developed at age 20, went to a different doctor and told me I just had picked up a yeast infection and it would go away in a week with SPAM. There are also tons of people that complain of symptoms and even tell the doctor the exact problem they have, without being treated because the doctor doesn't agree. This might be someone with ADHD, or someone with a fatal brain tumor that ends up dying without SPAM.

The discussion here isn't about whether or not doctors are doing their jobs, or people are hypocondriacs, the question was about medications interfering/aiding in pickup. Hopefully Billy you've gotten some help from the replies and you get by alright.
