I don't know. Artist is an extremely powerful word. One that is interpreted differently by many different people. For instance, I would not say that someone who studies the martial arts is a martial artist. They are simply someone that studies the martial arts. Someone that has dedicated vast amounts of time to the martial arts, is extremely accomplished (black belt or close) and can teach others; that's what it takes, in my mind, to be a martial artist.
It's a mixture of skill and dedication.

If someone spends a lot of time drawing, but can't do it very well, they're not an artist.
If someone can draw very well, but rarely puts pencil to paper, they're not an artist.
If someone makes a conscious effort to draw frequently, can draw very well, and understands what makes them a good drawer, (haha drawer), and can then pass on this information to others, then they are an artist.

As for myself, I'm not a PUA. I know the techniques, I'm developing the mindset, but I currently have much higher priorities in my life than dedicating myself to the artform, not the least is figuring out where I'm at, mentally, so I know what angle I'm looking at PU from.

I type too much.

Well I can draw REALLY well, always have done. I used to draw Cartoons and manga and shit when i was younger. Did i study it? Nope. Do i care ? Nope. But am i a good drawer yup. So am i an artist? Nope! Why? Cause i dont dedicate myself to the art form.

As i previously said, it does not matter which level your at. If you dedicate yourself to an art form then your a practitioner in that form. An artist.

AS soon as a JKD student stepped through the doors of the first bruce lee jeet kune do school (i would say Dojo but thats a Japanese word) HE was a martial artist, cause he was dedicating himself to that art form.

If you need to be at a certain level to be an artist then all people that deem themselves to be would be generic and at the same level. No one would be better than the next cause once you reach ARTIST level, you have attained that goal. Thats not right.

Chuck Norris was a martial artist (Sorry Chuck, IS a Martial Artist) and so is Jet Li, now... Jet Li could woop Chucks Ass (I feel a poll coming on) but niether of them are at mastery stage. So which one is deemed to be the Martial Artist, surely not the loser??

Anyway, im off to work and fear not Action, i type WAAAY to much also.

Merriam-Webster defines artist as:

1 a obsolete : one skilled or versed in learned arts b archaic : PHYSICIAN c archaic : ARTISAN 1
2 a : one who professes and practices an imaginative art b : a person skilled in one of the fine arts
3 : a skilled performer; especially : ARTISTE
4 : one who is adept at something <con artist> <strikeout artist>

It seems to me that 1 and 4 are most relevant to our purposes. Someone you is skilled or versed in learned arts (for pickup is, indeed, a learned art), and someone who is adept at something. Everyone on this forum is versed in the Learned Art of Pickup. Some of us are adept at it. Who determines what level of skill constitutes an artist as opposed to an amateur?

Not me.

Anyone who has become versed in this art, is a pick-up artist. Everyone who is adept at this art, is a pick-up artist. Where exactly those lines are drawn is unknown.

I thought this was a fairly simple question, I don't know whats up with these ambiguous responses everyone is giving. Yes or no, then why you think that way, no need for elaborate beat-around-the-bush answers, you all sound like politicians.

Yes, I am a pick-up artist, but not entirely for the reasons the King laid out in his initial post. I think his definition is skewed. By his reckoning, only those well accomplished in the art are pick-up artists, and I don't believe that to be true. I believe anyone who shows a level of competence in the field, using techniques learned through communication or experience is a pick-up artist. Labels base on your close ratio, how busy your week tends to be, et al eludes to a very exclusivist mentality that I think is harmful.

I have the basics _down_. I have a better understanding of theory than 90% of the guys on here. My close ratio is enviable. Am I a pick-up artist? Yes. Am I good? I believe so. But I'm in a long-term relationship, and because of that, by some of the King's criteria, I fall a little short of the mark.
