Post your stories of failure here.

Today I was in Barnes and Noble and was gonna try the "dating for dummies" routine on a HB6. Here's the quick version:

Me: (holding book at eye-level) soooooo, do. you. come. here. offff-ta-en.?
HB6: uh, you mean barnes and noble?
Me: (holding book a little higher up): um, no nevermind. what are you looking for?
HB6: a gift for my friend's bachelorette party.
Me: oh cool, when is she getting married?
HB6: August. but the party is in a week.

(bunch of artificial awkward small talk.)

It got really silent at certain points (for close to a minute) and was VERY awkward. (I was just standing there while she was browsing for a book.) I completely creeped this chick out, however, she was friendly - just taken back and didnt know what to say. She just didnt realize I was being silly and hitting on her at first...

Fuck it.

when she asked "uh barnes and noble" should have played the part and said
uhh idk. i thought they were just supposed to work on their own.

She didn't acknowledge the book, which is the point of the opener. make her acknowledge it.

yup man, the same thing happened to me today. I talked up this chick on the street and we were walking down the street together and all of a sudden I had no material to use. Before I ran out of material I had a chance with this girl, but then it got silent for like 40 seconds and it's just the two of us walking down the street with nothing to say. So I tried to break the silence by number closing, and, of course, I got slammed hard. The lesson I learned here is to always have topics to talk about. Different girls respond to different topics differently. The point is to have an entire repretoire of material to use so that you never get put in those awkward situations.

a guy did this same opener on an ex-girlfriend of mine at a Barnes & Noble here in NC. She blew him out, but I could tell she gave him some cool points for the attempt b/c she was a confident chick who could acknowledge him having the balls to try as opposed to the hundreds of other dudes that check out a woman on a daily basis/in their lives.
hoist the black flag, man. keep hammering, the forge of failure will beget a steel frame of success later on.
