| Field report #6 Monday December 3rd, 2007
Location: San Jose, then San Francisco
Objective: Just go to work and stuff
Outcome: No close, but some good flirting
Had lunch with a long-time-no-see ex coworker who happens to be a HB10. (Used to be a part time hired gun, a go-go dancer no less, until she focussed on her career. Taken, but a total sweetheart, and has plenty of HB friends 8 and above.) As usual she turned plenty of heads in the restaurant and this gave me plenty of social proof.
Waitress comes along, an Asian HB7. Plenty of chit-chat, I get her name and neg her about how she could be a flight attendant. Drop in a remark about the big pepper grinder, say it's the biggest I've ever seen and how "you could do things with a grinder like that." That line usually gets a good laugh, and is a great way of finding out if someone has a sexual sense of humour.
Great convo as always with HB10, catching up and stuff. AHB7 comes back at the end with the check and I neg her about the absence of her number on the receipt.
Give her a wave on the way out and she smiles and waves back from across the restaurant. I get HB10 to keep me in the loop for any parties coming up, since there's going to be plenty in the holiday season.
Back to San Francisco we go, leave work early to go and see a doctor about a back injury I picked up at the weekend somehow. She's actually a HB8 who I know through a sports organisation. I had taken her on an AFC style date in Chicago at the national finals. Tried to follow up on it but I don't think she's fully escaped from her long distance LTR yet.
After SPAM (complete with undressed examination, massage, and a big hug and a kiss on the cheek afterwards) I go out of the clinic and immediately get talking to a HB9 out walking a little dog. Walk along with her towards my car talking about the dog and dogs in general. Stop to pet the hound. Carry on walking...
Me: "What's her name"
HB9: something
Me: "What is it?"
HB9: [repeats name]
Me: "Ah. ... I suppose I should ask for your name too, where are my manners?" [MISTAKE 1]
HB9: [name]
Me: [name]
HB9 (on hearing accent): "Where are you from?"
Me: "Ireland. How about you?"
HB9: "I'm from here, from San Francisco."
Me: "I thought so. You have an accent."
HB9 (surprised): "Really?! I have a San Francisco accent?"
Me (distracted, approaching my car): "That's a little joke."
HB9: [laughs]
Me: "Well I'm over here" [MISTAKE 2]
HB9: "OK, nice meeting you."
Me: "You too. Night."
Mistakes:
1 - Could have negged her here instead of undermining myself. In future, say "Well I suppose I might as well get your name while I'm at it."
2 - Focus, dammit. I was on the way to a meeting but I was ahead of schedule and ended up getting there 15 minutes early. To what end? She didn't know where I was parked, I could easily have walked all the way home with her, and it was a nice night so I could have stood and talked another ten minutes. I think this was what I'll call a 'micro panic.' One of those little things that gives you an anxiety justifier and throws you off. More of this practice will get over that. I think I'm getting over the AA in the street pickup already, maybe need to work a bit more on the bar/club opener to get over the AA there.
Satisfaction with the day's work: 70%. Pretty high considering I hadn't planned on sarging. Also, getting into HB10's social circle is a good little investment, she'll be an excellent pivot since we have a great friendship and there'll be plenty of social proof there. Hopefully I'll have mastered a bit more PUA stuff by the time I get to the first of her parties.
