So I had a job today, to open any target in HUB mall (an on-campus mall) with the opener "If I were to give you a penguin, what would you name it?".

So my first two attempts...well they didn't happen. AA struck and I was so nervous my knees were shaking.

So I sat myself down, had a bite to eat, got on the chats to talk it out, and decided to try again on my way to my next class.

I was focusing mostly on targets sitting at tables, since they're not likely to walk away just as I open.
But then I saw a cute boy in line and decided lines were a good place to try too. I didn't go for the first one I saw because that line was too short, but the next guy I saw was split from the rest of the line due to traffic and I went for it.

I counted to three as I walked up, partly due to the three-second rule and partly to keep my mind busy.

And I opened first with a 'hi', and then after he said 'hi' back (There was a brief pause here as he tried to see if he knew me) I pulled out the "If I were to give you a penguin what would you name it?" line. So we talked about that for a bit and when the conversation was done, I left with a quick handshake.

The conversation was essentially one name, the guy thought Rupert would be a better name for the penguin my Uncle's daughter had dubbed PeePee, we agreed kids tend to give stuffed animals weird names and the like.

So for a first approach I think it went well. I didn't flop and afterwards I felt really good about the encounter.

So I've learned that not over-thinking is a must. In fact, if during the walk-up I can utterly shut off my brain, that'd be best.

I think that conversation was as good as it could have been with my material, I'm hoping to get some openers that I can turn into better conversations that have more to go on. I think the opener is a little short-lived and once it's over, it's over.

In the future I could probably DHV with stories about how I work with young kids on a regular basis, but again, I'm not sure where to go after that.

So that's my first ever approach. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. ^__^
