You're right. Personally, in situations like that when somebody tries to shot me down I pause a little longer before I respond. This will make the comment drop (and give you time to think of a response). If he still waits for an answer he has lowered himself to wait for your response and if you're lucky the comment will fall flat, which you can emphasize by turning slightly as if you didn't really get what he said and then back without responding.

Depending on the situation you could perhaps gone with:
- Yeah, I'm "working" them
This might sound a little rude though... maybe it would be better to say something similar that you also might turn into an internal joke with the HBs (freezing him out).

Or the classic
- No, they're really not my types (if your friend was just playing with you)

Although, the general rule of mine is to never respond to rudeness.

I just want to make sure I understand; was the amog friend YOUR friend or the friend of the girls you were working?

If it was my friend, I would tell him right there to fuck off. You have to immediately alpha him in front of the girls. You can get away with it because he is your friend and not likely to start swinging fists at you. You are also sending a message, like, you are insulted he would suggest you are hitting on these two chicks. That is the thing - you gotta both alpha him AND play the victim role. This also sends a slight neg at the girls, they will likely think "what, he isn't hitting on us? Why not? We're cute. What's wrong with hitting on us?"

Girls like to see that you aren't one to take any shit. That is part of being what I call the Sensitive Asshole that girls want to be with.

This sort of thing has happened to me very rarely but it has happened.
