Eleven people, including children and infants, jumped out of a third story apartment window in the wee hours of the morning claiming they were fleeing from the devil. It is currently under investigation as to whether or not they jumped voluntarily or were forced to jump from the window. What is clear is that they apparently thought they were fleeing the devil.
The incident happened after one of the women in the group became hysterical screaming she had seen the devil at about 3 a.m. According to Odile Favire, deputy prosecutor in Versailles, France, one of the occupants of the apartment got up to see to his crying child. According to Favire, the other occupants thought he was the devil, stabbed him in the hand and forced him out of the apartment. He was completely naked.
However, there are conflicting reports. Some reports on French television indicate the man took off his clothes and entered a room where the other occupants were watching television, precipitating the mass panic.
After having his hand slashed with a knife and being forced out of the apartment, the naked 30-year-old man attempted to get back into the apartment. The others panicked and jumped or were forced from the 3rd floor window.
All of those who jumped were taken to the hospital with multiple traumas. A 4-month-old baby later died of his injuries.
It is yet to be determined if the group jumped voluntarily or were forced. Two men have been taken into custody. They are he man who was suspected of being the devil and another man who jumped from the window holding a 2-year-old. They are being questioned by French authorities.
