| I just want to share with you folks some observations about the last couple of weeks. I finished a project and got a little green in my pocket, so I invested wisely in some new duds. I hit an upsale consignment shop and from a local discount retailer that sells designer clothes very inexpensively. I only spent about US$200-250 in total between the two stores, but I got two pairs of fuck-yeah boots, four pairs of jeans, four shirts and two overcoat/jacket type things. The clothes are stylish and I chose wisely to make sure they fit me well - they are form fitting without pinching and definitely not too baggy or loose (which is my normal style of dress). They're slightly revealing without looking like I am flaunting sex. They are appropriate for night wear and can be peacocked up with the right accessories, but they are also acceptable for casual wear at my job (which is VERY casual) and just in general - to the store, etc. got a couple of diamond stud earrings (both my ears were already pierced) Nothing else about my appearance changed - same spikey haircut etc. I am wearing my glasses less, though.
The boots are the closest thing to "high heels" I've worn ever in my life - they heel/sole is about 2" thick. I'm a short guy, which is part of the reason I got them. They also have firm solid heels that make noise when walking, and I don't run in these, I'm forced to walk a little more slowly. It gives me a subtle amount of swagger and importance, like I'll get there when I damn well feel like it.
After this mini-makeover, I noticed a difference in the way people treat and look at me right away. The people I work with are more engaging and interested in my opinion instead of just going on about their lives like I'm not there (although I'd be shocked if they're not thinking to themselves, "What the hell happened to *this* guy?"). The girl who works the register at my local lunch spot is suddenly chatting me up all the time instead of not even looking me in the eye when I go through the line (she's beastly so no interest on my part). Other people where I work notice me from afar and wave if they're not close enough to talk. If they are talk, I get acknowledged directly and consistently instead of being ignored or given a cursory nod.
I'm just sharing this because for you folks who haven't fully addressed your appearance (outer game), it MATTERS. People treat you differently and with more respect if you appear to respect yourself.
