Something I haven't seen talked about on this forum since I've been a member:
Bad Breath...
Alright, I think we all know that bad breath in general is a turn-off. So what to do about it?
Causes: Dry Mouth, Food, Poor Dental Hygiene, Bacteria, Alcohol/Coffee, Smoking
Solutions:
There's the obvious--
  • Don't eat things with garlic/onions/other foods with strong odors [eg many types of salad dressings]
Clean your mouth-- Brushing doesn't do the whole job-- you should ideally floss/scrape your tounge
Some less obvious stuff:
  • -Celery, carrots, and peanuts are some examples of food that help to freshen your breath
-Sugarless mints are better for freshening breath because sugar dries out your mouth more quickly [dry mouth is another cause of bad breath]
-Mouthwash may make your breath worse-- mouthwash can kill the bacteria that cause bad breath and mask bad breath; however, the compounds left behind will start to release odor because many mouthwashes cause your mouth to dry. To avoid dry mouth from mouthwash use mouthwash WITHOUT alcohol.
-If nothing else, rinse your mouth after a meal if you think you may get bad breath from the food-- the less plaque in your mouth, the better.
Also, to check your breath [some of you may know this already] allow some saliva to dry on your wrist or someplace else-- on skin [wash it off after lol]-- then smell the dried saliva. You should be able to tell how good/bad your breath is from this.

If anyone else has any suggestions, add em-- ill try to think of some more.

This all sounds great, but for me it seems the sourse of bad breathe comes from far back in my mouth like the back of my throat or maybe in my throat or stomach...what can one do about that?

ive seen adds for a pill you swallow thats suppossed to freshen breathe from the stomach up, forget the name and im skeptical...any ideas?

Ka,

My father uses those pills
http://www.amazon.com/Health-Asure-Mint ... B00014EP9W

He also uses this liquid that comes in a little bottle... it comes from the gas station or the drug store. You put a drop on the back of your tongue or swallow it, I don't know.

Something that also helps is to drink water. Seriously.

Yep those are the pills i had seen...however they aparently changed them a little. Do you and your father think they work?

Any idea what the liquid is called?

Yea i dont typically drink water but it has been on my ever so long self improvement list...shifting away from sugary drinks and going to juices/teas/water.

Thanks Zip.

two possibilities that i can possibly think of [im sure that there are more]..
one-- you may have eaten something that goes into your bloodstream and releases odor from there-- like garlic or onions
the other possibility is that you may have little particles that get stuck in your tonsils/back of your throat that release odor-- basically particles of food that decay in your tonsils

And I actually forgot to mention something in my original post that actually could have something to do with you too-- POST NASAL DRIP-- basically if you have problems w/ your sinuses you can get bad breath-- there is medication for this

by the way, bad breath is actually something that your doctor/dentist can address, so bring it up at a regular checkup if you feel the need to

wikipedia actually has a pretty good article on bad breath [referred to as halitosis] here

Ka, have you tried using a tounge scraper? I think that that could help as well. I have to use mouthwash twice a day at least, i go through a pack of orbit gum every two days as well.

But from what I have heard is that a tongue scraper will get alot of excess gunk that can cause bad breath.... its not a pretty sight either.

Apparently a lot of bad breath comes way deep - like the stomach. I figure the better your diet is, the less chance you will stink. Large meat based dishes, garlic, onions and anything with Fish sauce are somethings to stay away from :)

Brush your teeth before you go and clean your tongue. Then if you feel pasty in the mouth, get yourself a drink and sip it. The alcohol will freshen you up.
