Can color theory be useful for creating a cohesive style?

I dunno if this would be relevant to style, but when making cartoon characters its best to stick with a limited palette (amount of colors). Like three or four basic colors that are repeated throught the character, including the clothes. Visually this gives a much more cohesive look to something which results in a more apppealing character. A good example of a repeating color would be say you have brown eyes, so you wear brown shoes, or brown pants. Also colors that contrast are visualy striking. Here are the contrasting colors, if combined create the most impact together.

Blue and Orange
Red and Green
Yellow and Purple
Black and White

Black and White with a single color is also a really cool color theme.

Personally I like to wear colors that accent my eyes. I have hazel eyes so today I'm wearing an interesting outfit, well at least to me. ;-) Since I'm at work, I'm wearing Green, khahki and black Merrel shoes, Khaki dockers tan brown, An olive green sweater, with a Red Polo collared undershirt. The red collar of the undershirt is visible over the green sweater for nice visual contrast.

I dunno if that's great fashion but its a coherent whole in art terms. The shoes match with green shirts and most khaki pants. There is some contrasting colors for some visual interest, and it accents my eyes, and none of the clothes are baggy or too tight.

haha, yeah i have a very in-depth color wheel on my computer. i use it to mach my clothes sometimes. you should aslo match values of colors (brightnesses).

It works well. also teritary colors work well for matching too (three equally spaced colors around the wheel)

I"m glad to see i'm not the only dweeb. :D

Animator here. One of the geekiest types of artists you can be. ;-)

Since you brought up brightness, you reminded me of tone. This is the grey scale value of the color. On a typical color wheel there is one tone.

A fairly decent color wheel, yet the colors are not very well balanced for the tertiaries and secondaries. Very nice layout though.

I think this illustrates the idea of tone, all of the horizontal rows are the same tone. There is just a hue change between each of the vertical rows. You might be able to get away with using all of the hues present in one outfit, but it would be risky I think. s[/img]

I need to look into this a bit more. Does anyone have any ideas where to start, web site, a book, or something.
I'm thinking about my closet right now, and you got your blacks (most of stuff there), whites and grays.
There are some blue jeans there and couple of blue button up shirts.

I am in dire need of some colours and knowledge of how to match them.

Well you could ask me here. Or via pm. I'm 3 credits shy of a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) in Animation.

Well it's more of a fashion advice that I'm looking for than just color matching.
Spring seson is coming and I'm looking into wearing more color, specialy since most men in Boston limit their clothes on various shades of gray.

Check out a GQ magazine for fashion advice. You could probably easily get away with wearing dark brown blazier, white shirt, or black (might be interesting) with bright color tie and jeans. This would definetly stand out among the gray shades. Along with some nice brown leather shoes which should be the same color as the jacket and belt. From what I have read in GQ and other places it seems that the leading man look from old school Hollywood is coming back. Also GQ seems to pimp VERY expensive clothing so you could probably get away with cheaper brands if you have them tailered to fit.

Also your bodyshape affects what you can wear.

That's my next step.
It's funny but for the first time I'm looking for a girl that LJBF me.
It's more fun and a good idea to bring a girl along when shopping.

I wouldn't suggest the colors red and green together, because then you would just look like a walking Christmas advertisement or tree. LOL! But the other colors sound pretty good together.

I had bright red and green shoes, got tons of compliments on them, although they are kind of well worn now. You could joke about the Christmas element though! Although I got more dorothy comments than anything, or wear did you buy those shoes!

I really like the Idea of taking a LBJF friend clothing shopping, that might take her out of the zone as well if you play your cards right.
