I'm a shy guy and it seems like most people mistake it for arrogance.

A girl i had class with ended up knowing my roommate. When we were formally introduced she told me she always wanted to say "hi" but i didn't look approachable.

How can i work on this? I try to keep a smile on my face but it feels forced. I try to think of something funny so it will be more natural but i just end up laughing by myself like a psyhco.

What about body language. Facial expression is only 20% of it. Don't cross your arms, Palms out helps alot. Also have good posture keep you chin up and your shoulders back.

If you stand like the Jesus statue in Rio, thats as open as you can be.

Keep a smile on your face.
Smile while you talk, while you listen, while you do just anything.
Smile is the most powerful weapon, it lets them know that you are a funny guy
to be around, and while you talk with a girl it can build comfort.
But dont overdo it because then it wont look natural, smile at approptiate moments.

Smiling can be over done though. If you look like the the comic book joker you're doing it wrong.

Think like one of those ambiguously gay dudes in Abercrombie & Fitch catalogues. They may be gay as hell, but girls look at them and think "OMG HOT!"

THe problem with forced smiles is that they are forced. If you feel like your muscles are straining while you try to maintaint a smile then it's going to look fake and scare people away.

Best advice is just think of things that genuinely make you laugh, even if no one else would get the joke. Smiling will be a natural byproduct and it will look sincere.

Take it from a guy who smiles way too often as well. Smile only if there's reason to smile. That's it. Smiling constantly is just basically saying "I'm so happy to be with you right now."

Other than the "open" body language, eye contact, eye contact, eye contact, maybe throw in a few nods or eyebrows (dont overdo the eyebrow shit)

My professor in college had us do a drill - look in your mirror, stand with you arms crossed and say "I welcome you with a warm heart and open arms" - it looks stupid. Now palms out Jesus Statue like Faust said - see the difference?

Anyway, literally keep that head up or people arent gonna see your face.
