I thought I had good body language until recently I realized that when I passed people on the sidewalk, I would dip my chin. A sub-conscious, submissive gesture left over from my days as a hopeless AFC.

Since then I've consciously kept my chin up while passing people. What an incredible difference. Strangers look at me differently -- with curiosity, respect. I've also noticed that with my chin raised, the rest of my body assumes a more confident aspect.

Anyway, I thought I'd throw this out there in case there were other guys like me. Pay attention to whether you dip your chin in public, and then try doing the opposite.

Men who have the "chin down/dipping" thing going on (most men) look like they're trying not to be noticed and signal that they are not a threat. They're also protecting the throat.

Chin up looks like you're not worried about threats around you and you have important stuff you're going to do. Chin up/down can easily be the difference between walking through a bad neighborhood at night and getting mugged vs given wide space.

Always keep your throat exposed, chin up. Do not block your chest or abdomen with drinks. Take up space.

Spend a couple of times going to a club or some place similar and scan around every once in a while for the chin down vs chin up guys.

The chin up guys have more women being friendly with them.

The chin down (and chin-dippers like you mentioned) guys will also do lots of blocking of their chests with drinks. It takes quite a bit of energy to do that and they have to keep shifting around because it gets uncomfortable FAST. If you have this BAD habit, try an experiment at home. Hold a beer in front of your chest in one spot. Notice how quickly it becomes uncomfortable. Yet, you could hold a drink in your hand at your side almost endlessly.

There isn't any good reason to be holding a drink in front of the chest except to block/protect it.

Chin up. Don't block with drinks or anything else. Wide stance.
