How come the reputation points were taken away?

I used the reputation points link to find out why the user received them. More than half the time it redirected me to a thread that was useful. I am curious to know why the site took them away as seeing they were helpful in my opinion. These threads included great responses that really helped me on my pickup path, just seems like a shame.
