Hi guys,

I noticed that the left side of my abs sticks out more than the right side, I guess I was pulling a little bit towards the left when doing abs exercises. What is the best way to correct it (which exercises) and how often should I do them?

Thanks!

Try plank variations [elbow/toe, left side oblique, right side oblique, and reverse].

Those always even everything out.

It all boils down to muscle confusion, so incorporate these with your regular ab-routine, and you'll see results in no time.

Thanks for a quick response! We used to do a lot of plank variations in karate training, I can't believe I totally forgot about these exercises. Should I exercise the underdeveloped side more??

I tend to focus on my weak points first, so yes, but don't create muscle inefficiency by overdoing it.

Moderation with anaerobic/aerobic exercise is the best way to go.

Some people just don't have symmetric, perfectly aligned abs. It's jsut the way you (and I) were born. I still think it's aesthetic. Looks natural, especially when they look real warped.

They're not asymetric, they're perfectly aligned, it's just that one side seems more ripped than the other side, the left sticks out more, I'll try plank exercises and post results, maybe even pics when I get a nice tan
Thanks for the reponses guys!

My left side abs are bigger than the right as well. I've read articles saying its most likely a genetic thing if the difference isn't extreme. Kinda like arms how 1 arms always bigger than the other.

I don't remember them being like this before, it's not a huge difference, but I'd still like to correct it if possible. I've incorporated the plank into my routine so we'll see. I'm not losing sleep over it, but I am a perfectionist :)

How noticeable is the difference? basically, would anyone else notice it?

If you are doing any weighted ab exercise - try cutting down the weight for a few weeks and really focus on evenly using both sides and keeping perfect form.

I don't think anybody would notice it, a trainer probably would. I'm doing only bodyweight exercises. I'm already seeing an improvement so I'll just keep going with the plank and post results in a couple of weeks.

My favourite ab exercises right now are the woodchopper and using the ab wheel.
Woodchopper is with a cable in both hands and you twist round with arms extended obv in an action like ur chopping down a tree and the ab wheel is one of those wheels with handles, where you roll the wheel out so your in a sort of plank position on ur knees.

Doing more work on one side with the woodchopper might make a difference to your problem and the ab wheel i just mentioned just cos i love it. Really works every inch of your abs dynamically (whereas the plank is static) and properly strengthens as opposed to toning.

I dont think it can be changed, like an above poster wrote, some of it is genetic.

also, if you are right-handed your left abdominals will be more ripped than the right usually because if you do an athletic move such as throwing a ball or kick, you lead with the left side and not the right. So a lifetime of doing that will make the left side different. Kind of like how if you are right handed your right arm will be vanier and more muscular, but not by much.

I'll check out the woodchopper, thanks for the suggestion!

@lvattempts I'm actually left handed :) But I do many of the things you mentioned with the right hand, also when I have to carry heavier objects from the car to the house, I usually use my right hand, so that could have something to do with it. Thanks for the responses guys, cheers!

Ok, well the planks seem to evened everything out, almost completely. I'll keep the planks in my regular routine because my core has never been stronger, I just love it. Thanks again for the advice!
